Understanding Holistic Iridology

Iridology is a tool used in holistic approaches for deciphering the ailments an individual may be experiencing. The basis of iridology is to reveal the individual characteristics that may shed light on potential issues that are affecting one’s well-being due to genetics, thought patterns, ecology and life choices.

Iridology is neither a treatment nor a definitive answer, rather a window into the overall health, as the body and mind reveal within the nerve endings and send messages into the tissues of the iris. As stated by Hippocrates:

“It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.”

As unique as the iris colorations and patterns are to every person, they are also indicative of the person’s condition. Potential health issues can be identified in the patterns of the iris and with early detection, action can be taken to prevent major health problems. The various patterns and tissue densities of the iris change as our health does.

For instance, white rings that encompass the iris may indicate potential heart or cholesterol issues or even signify stress. Irregular white circles that resemble the shape of pearls or a rosary necklace identify lymphatic issues. The location of the rings around the iris, along with the colors and patterns are important factors in the accurate diagnosis of ailments or other concerns.

The analyses of an expert Iridologist can advise you on the genetic predispositions that you may be prone to, and will also assess the patterns and depths of the various eye tissues that have been affected by the way you feel, think, act and eat over the course of time. The potential issues that are identified through iridology analyses are typically addressed with the use of herbs, minerals, and supplements, along with recommended dietary changes.

Dr. Bernard Jensen and Iridology

Dr. Bernard Jensen created the very first chart or map of the eyes in the 1950s and has been referred to as “one of America’s pioneering nutritionists and Iridologists.” He began his career in 1929 as a chiropractor and soon after, he made the decision to redirect his attention to nutrition in an effort to address his personal health issues. Dr. Jensen devoted more than sixty years to holistic health, nutrition and the study of the iris. Dr. Jensen’s chart of the iris identified the various sections of the eyes and how they related to systems, organs, and specific body parts.

As his charts show, the iris is much more than rings and colors. Every detail represents a connection to another part of the body. His chart somewhat resembles a jigsaw puzzle, carving out the various relative areas of the body, with the right eye correlating with the right side of the body and the left eye linking to the left side. The colorations, patterns, spots, and layers in the iris may change ever so slightly, but are a direct response to a physical area nonetheless and are signs that your body is attempting to communicate so balance can be re-established.

The level of details in his charts and his knowledge of how the eyes revealed health issues paved the way of iridology. For example, the multiple layers of tissues within the iris convey the severity of health problems ranging from acute, sub-acute, chronic and degenerative. Just as the historical story of the owl’s iris changed as its broken leg healed, the iris will react to inflammation, organ weakness, nutritional deficiencies, etc.

Dr. Jensen’s teachings, known as the “Jensodian teachings” laid the foundation of iridology and are still important. However, because of the scientifically backed evidence now available, the education of Iridology is being transitioned into the Holistic teachings and practices.

Iridology and Holistic Health

Iridologists have been dedicated to teaching on the scientific advancements of iridology; and over the past three decades, institutions like theInternational Practitioner Association (IIPA)and the International College of Iridology are dedicated to providing instruction on the many ways Holistic Iridology can enhance natural remedies for a variety of ailments. Instructors like Dr. Toni Miller and Dr. David Pesek are passionate about educating students on all the latest research.

Since Dr. Jensen’s research, the knowledge of Iridology has progressed substantially. During the earlier teachings of iridology, it was primarily based on physical aspects. Fortunately, the ever-growing exploration is proving that Iridology is a valuable tool for health screenings on the physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological levels.
